Afghanistan’s trade balance faces significant challenges in the first half of this year due to a drop in exports and a rise in imports. The country’s exports have decreased to 598 million dollars, whereas imports have surged to 6.656 billion dollars.

Trade Deficit in Afghanistan Worsens with a 125 Million Dollar Drop in Exports

Afghanistan’s trade balance is increasingly strained in the first half of the year. According to the National Statistics and Information Authority, the country’s exports have plummeted by 125 million and 700 thousand dollars, falling to a total of 598 million and 500 thousand dollars over the past six months.

This decline in exports is stark when compared to the same period last year. At the same time, data indicates that the trend of imports is ongoing, with imports rising to 6 billion and 656 million and 600 thousand dollars, reflecting an increase of over 116 million dollars compared to the previous year.

Severe Dependence on Imports Calls for Reevaluation of Trade Structure

The upward trend in imports highlights a significant reliance on foreign goods within Afghan markets. Imported items predominantly include fuel, oils, industrial machinery, and vehicles, underscoring the urgent need to reassess the country’s production and trade framework.

Simultaneously, a glance at Afghanistan’s export basket reveals that dried and fresh fruits, along with medicinal herbs, continue to comprise a substantial portion of the nation’s exports. Unfortunately, these economic conditions indicate an escalating trade deficit and growing economic challenges within the country.

Given these realities, there is a pressing necessity for fundamental reforms in the country’s trade and production policies to mitigate reliance on imports and bolster the export sector.
