UN Calls for Ceasefire Amid Escalating Violence in Eastern Afghanistan

The UN Secretary-General has urged an immediate halt to the violent clashes in eastern Afghanistan caused by airstrikes from the Pakistani army, calling on both parties to resolve their disputes through diplomatic channels.

UN Concern Over Civilian Casualties

Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, expressed deep concern regarding the escalation of military tensions and recent attacks between Afghanistan and Pakistan. He called for an immediate cessation of violence and highlighted the need for protecting civilians in border areas. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated in a press conference that Guterres is closely monitoring the situation, especially the fresh outbreak of hostilities that has resulted in significant civilian casualties.

Discrepancies in Civilian Casualty Reports

According to verified reports from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), at least 28 civilians have been killed and 49 injured due to airstrikes by the Pakistani military in the provinces of Paktia, Paktika, and Kunar. In contrast, officials from the Taliban government in Kabul have provided much higher figures, claiming that 38 civilians, including women and children, have died, with over 163 others wounded, some in critical condition.

Displacement and Humanitarian Assessments

The UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson also noted that these deadly rocket attacks and air raids have instilled fear and led to widespread displacement among local residents in the eastern provinces. International humanitarian organizations are currently assessing the damages and conducting a thorough needs assessment to provide urgent assistance, including shelter, food, and medical services, to those affected and internally displaced.

Emphasis on Diplomatic Solutions and International Law

In his official statement, the UN Secretary-General called on the authorities of both neighboring countries to exercise restraint and dismiss military options, urging them to return to the diplomatic negotiating table. Guterres underscored the necessity of fully adhering to international commitments related to human rights and the laws of war, emphasizing that the protection of civilian lives and public infrastructure must remain a fundamental priority and that the lives of ordinary people should not be caught in political conflicts.
