UN Report Confirms Civilian Casualties Amid Discrepancies in Official Figures

Guterres’ appeal comes in response to escalating military tensions and recent hostilities between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated in a press briefing that Guterres is deeply concerned about the recent outbreak of violence that has resulted in significant civilian casualties, and he is closely monitoring the situation.

Widespread Displacement and Humanitarian Assessments Underway

According to reports validated by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), at least twenty-eight civilians have lost their lives and forty-nine others have been injured following the airstrikes on parts of Paktia, Paktika, and Kunar provinces. In contrast, Taliban officials in Kabul have reported much higher figures, claiming that thirty-eight civilians, including women and children, have been killed, with more than one hundred sixty-three others injured, some in critical condition.

Emphasis on Diplomatic Solutions and Adherence to International Law

The UN Secretary-General also highlighted that the deadly rocket and aerial assaults have led to widespread fear and displacement among local residents in the eastern provinces of Afghanistan. He called upon the governments of both neighboring countries to exercise restraint and set aside military options in favor of diplomatic discussions to address the ongoing challenges. Guterres stressed the necessity of fully adhering to international commitments concerning human rights and the laws of war, emphasizing that the protection of civilians and essential infrastructure must always be a fundamental priority, and civilian lives should not be sacrificed for political conflicts.
