Devastating Flood in Nuristan Claims Lives and Leaves Many Missing

A severe flood in Nuristan province has resulted in at least 20 fatalities and over 100 individuals reported missing. The disaster has inflicted significant damage on residential areas, markets, farmlands, and public infrastructure, with search and rescue operations still ongoing.

Over 100 People Still Missing

Fereydoun Samim, spokesperson for the governor of Nuristan, stated that 105 people are unaccounted for in Paroon, the provincial capital. He noted that the mayor of Paroon and several government employees are among those missing.

Initial reports indicate that a number of bodies have been discovered in the affected areas, but the final casualty numbers remain unclear.

Extensive Damage to Paroon City

According to published reports, the flood has swept through large sections of Paroon city, causing widespread damage to residential and commercial areas. The severe water flow has completely destroyed the local municipality building and has severely impacted hotels, dozens of shops, and the main market of the city. Additionally, farmlands and various public infrastructures have been destroyed in the path of the flood.

Search and Rescue Operations Ongoing

Rescue teams and local residents have begun efforts to search for the missing and transport the injured. However, the challenging mountainous terrain of Nuristan and a lack of emergency equipment have complicated these rescue operations.

Taliban officials have also announced that search and rescue teams have been dispatched to assist those affected by the flood.

Warnings About Continued Rainfall and Potential Flooding

Nuristan is one of Afghanistan’s mountainous and remote provinces bordering Pakistan, making it susceptible to sudden flooding due to its geographic location. Local authorities have urged residents to avoid approaching rivers and high-risk areas. Meanwhile, meteorological offices have warned of the possibility of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and flooding in several other provinces of Afghanistan.

Climate experts believe that rising global temperatures are increasing atmospheric humidity and intensifying heavy rainfall, contributing to a greater likelihood of sudden floods. According to these experts, Afghanistan’s mountainous terrain, inadequate infrastructure, widespread poverty, degradation of natural resources, and the impacts of decades of conflict render it particularly vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters.
