The market for buying and selling auto parts in the strategic Spin Boldak area, which was previously recognized as one of the most vibrant commercial hubs in the country, has now lost its former vitality, with transactions nearly grinding to a halt. This severe stagnation has left hundreds of merchants, shopkeepers, and local workers facing crippling financial challenges.

Closure of Transit Highways from Pakistan to Iran

Abdul Baqi Beena, the Deputy Head of the Chamber of Commerce and Investment in Kandahar, revealed the unfortunate details behind this economic crisis in discussions with media outlets, including the French news agency. According to him, before the persistent closures of the border crossings between Afghanistan and Pakistan, a significant portion of auto parts entered the country through the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas. However, with the escalation of conflict and insecurity along the western borders and in Iranian territories, this vital route has also been cut off for Afghan traders.

Direct Impact of Middle Eastern Conflicts on Afghan Livelihoods and Trade

The crisis worsened when armed conflicts erupted in the Middle East in February. The Deputy Head of the Kandahar Chamber of Commerce confirmed that these battles have led to severe insecurities in international shipping routes, significantly disrupting and impeding global trade through the Strait of Hormuz—issues that have directly impacted Afghanistan’s domestic markets.
It is noteworthy that the auto parts that used to arrive at the major Spin Boldak market played a critical role in the country’s semi-industrial economy; these components were either used locally for the construction and assembly of new vehicles or sent to other provinces for transportation and maintenance of vehicles. With the stoppage of this cycle, the transport sector of the country is suffering significant damage.
