Auto Parts Market in Spin Boldak Faces Crisis Amid Border Closures and Middle Eastern Conflicts

The vibrant market for auto parts in the border district of Spin Boldak, Kandahar Province, has come to a standstill due to the closure of border crossings with Pakistan, ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, and the blockade of transit routes through Iran.

Unprecedented Decline in One of the South’s Key Trade Markets

Once regarded as one of Afghanistan’s busiest trading hubs, the auto parts market in the strategically located Spin Boldak has lost its previous vitality, with transactions nearly coming to a halt. This severe downturn has placed hundreds of traders, shopkeepers, and local workers in dire financial straits.

Closure of Key Transit Routes from Pakistan to Iran

Abdul Baqi Bina, the deputy head of the Kandahar Chamber of Commerce and Investment, revealed the grim details behind this economic crisis in a recent interview with media and the French news agency. He stated that before the successive closures of the border crossings between Afghanistan and Pakistan, a significant portion of auto parts entered Afghanistan through the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas. However, with the escalation of conflict and instability along the western borders and in Iranian territories, this vital route has also been blocked for Afghan traders.

Direct Impact of Middle Eastern Conflicts on Afghan Economic Stability

The main crisis erupted in February when hostilities in the Middle East intensified. The deputy head of the Kandahar Chamber of Commerce confirmed that these conflicts have brought severe insecurity to international waterways, significantly disrupting and impairing global trade through the Strait of Hormuz. This situation has directly inflicted negative consequences on domestic markets in Afghanistan. These conflicts have had a broader impact, as seen in Middle East Conflicts Drive Food Prices Skyward in Afghanistan. It is worth noting that the auto parts that previously reached the major Spin Boldak market played a crucial role in the country’s semi-industrial economy. These components were either used for the assembly of new vehicles domestically or dispatched for the repair and maintenance of transportation vehicles to other provinces and regions of the country. With the suspension of this cycle, the transportation sector is facing significant damage.
