UK Mulls Reopening Embassy in Afghanistan

British Deputy Foreign Minister Andrew Mitchell has indicated that the UK government is contemplating the reopening of its embassy in Afghanistan.

However, he stressed that the UK remains distant from officially recognizing the Taliban-led government. Mitchell highlighted that despite the lack of recognition, there are regular interactions and discussions between UK officials and the Taliban.

Mitchell further noted that the possibility of reestablishing the British Embassy in Kabul is under review. Nevertheless, he asserted that the UK will persist in exerting political pressure on the Taliban to induce changes in their conduct.

In his statement, Mitchell acknowledged that the UK is engaged in pragmatic dialogue with the Taliban. However, he pointed out that the current political and security landscape in Afghanistan does not present conducive conditions for the reinstallation of the British diplomatic mission in Kabul.
