Rising Tensions as Deadline Approaches for Al-Siliya Camp’s Closure

As the deadline for the closure of the Al-Siliya camp approaches, over 1,100 Afghan refugees are facing an uncertain future and escalating anxieties.

Afghan Refugees in Al-Siliya Camp at Risk of Deportation

The Al-Siliya camp in Qatar, which serves as a temporary shelter for Afghan refugees, is set to close by October 1. Approximately 1,100 Afghan refugees currently reside at this site, previously known as a U.S. military base. Most of these individuals have been associates of American military personnel and affiliated organizations from 2001 to 2021.

These refugees were evacuated to Qatar during Operation Allies Refuge in August 2021 with the expectation of eventually relocating to the United States, but they are now grappling with significant bureaucratic and security challenges. Residents of the camp express frustration over the lack of communication from authorities about their future destination after the impending closure date.

Growing Concerns Over Afghan Refugee Deportations

Anxiety regarding potential deportations or transfers to other countries is steadily increasing among the refugees. Some applicants have highlighted their separation from family members in various countries, making their situation particularly distressing. According to a report from the Afghan Evac Coalition, 292 requests from these applicants have been definitively denied.

Among the refugees are around 400 children, which further burdens the families. In response, several American lawmakers have criticized U.S. officials for neglecting their local partners. The precarious situation of Afghan refugees at the Al-Siliya camp requires urgent attention.
