Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister, has highlighted Donald Trump’s attempts to revive US military infrastructure in Afghanistan. Trump had earlier stated that he would retrieve abandoned American weapons from the Taliban and regain control of Bagram Air Base to monitor China’s activities.
Lavrov remarked, “The US is seeking to reestablish its military presence in Afghanistan and is leveraging neighboring countries to achieve this goal. Rebuilding military bases in Afghanistan, especially Bagram, is part of these efforts.”
These statements come as Donald Trump, before his inauguration, warned that he would cut humanitarian aid to Afghanistan and retrieve American weapons left behind with the Taliban.
Trump also emphasized during his campaign that Bagram Air Base holds strategic significance due to its proximity to China’s nuclear facilities. He plans to reclaim the base as part of a trade agreement with Afghanistan.
According to Trump, Bagram’s unique geographic location, being just an hour’s distance from China’s missile facilities, makes it a key asset for monitoring China’s nuclear activities.
These comments have sparked widespread international reactions and raised concerns about the potential return of military tensions in the region.
