Urgent Call to Action: UN-Habitat Highlights Dire Conditions for Returning Afghan Refugees

پناهجو افغان 2 550x295 - Urgent Call to Action: UN-Habitat Highlights Dire Conditions for Returning Afghan Refugees

The UN-Habitat Office for Human Settlements in Afghanistan published a report on the condition of returning Afghan refugees on its official X social media page…

This organization, in a message that referred to the reality of the returnees’ lives, wrote: Starting anew with nothing – this is the reality for many returned Afghans.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme emphasized that in light of these individuals’ emergency situation, shelter is the first step towards dignity and recovery. According to this statement, the United Nations, in collaboration with its partners, supports returning Afghans by providing shelter and essential services.

Warning about Resource Shortages Against the Wave of Returns

This international organization highlighted the large-scale dimensions of the return crisis and stressed that current support programs require significantly more resources. The UN-Habitat explicitly called for greater assistance from the global community, stating: We must do more.

This appeal for help comes at a time when over 2 million Afghans have been forcibly returned from neighboring countries, particularly Iran and Pakistan, in the past two years, and this process continues due to the stringent policies of these countries, placing unprecedented pressure on the infrastructure and service capacities of international organizations in Afghanistan.
