Red Cross Launches Cash Aid for Earthquake-Hit Families in Afghanistan

The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Afghanistan announced cash assistance for 1,500 families affected by the recent devastating earthquake in Nurgal district of Kunar province.

On Monday, November 26, Katrin Ritz, the President of the ICRC in Afghanistan, shared an update on her official social media account on X (formerly Twitter), announcing the launch of an immediate aid operation for those impacted by the earthquake in Kunar province.

Ritz stated that following the devastation in Kunar, Red Cross teams, in close cooperation with the Afghan Red Crescent, distributed cash to 1,500 affected families in Nurgal district. This initiative is part of a rapid response to the recent humanitarian disaster in Eastern provinces, which has resulted in thousands of casualties.

Support for Livelihood Recovery and Basic Needs

The ICRC President emphasized that the aim of the cash assistance goes beyond merely providing food supplies. She explained:

“This support helps families meet their basic needs while they work to improve and rebuild their livelihoods.”

The cash assistance enables those affected by the earthquake to purchase essential items based on their priorities and immediate family needs, a crucial measure in the aftermath of such a crisis.
