The ongoing livelihood crisis in Afghanistan is severely impacting families’ purchasing power, leading to significant changes in their consumption patterns. With daily earnings plummeting and prices soaring, many families in Kabul and other provinces are now limited to buying only basic necessities like rice and oil.

A woman teacher in Kabul, who is the primary breadwinner for her three-member family, reports that her monthly income of around 4,000 Afghanis is insufficient even for quality rice. Consequently, she has been compelled to resort to purchasing inferior goods—a reality echoed by many families across the country.

Declining Purchasing Power and Economic Instability

Artisans in Balkh province also express concerns that economic instability and significant financial fluctuations are hindering their ability to meet basic food needs. Shopkeepers acknowledge a noticeable drop in customer purchases, a change that reflects the deepening livelihood crisis affecting the nation.

Despite the World Bank estimating a GDP growth of 4.8% in its recent report from the months of April to June, this growth has failed to make a significant impact on the daily lives of the population. Economic stagnation and rising population pressures are exacerbating financial strains on families.

Serious Threat of Food Insecurity

Meanwhile, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has warned that nearly 14 million people in Afghanistan will face a serious threat of food insecurity in the coming months. This alarming statistic highlights the depth of the food crisis in the country and underscores the urgent need to address the livelihoods of the populace.
