Five child miners tragically lost their lives following a gold mine collapse in Takhar province. This disaster highlights ongoing safety issues and the exploitation of children in mining operations.
A gold mine in the Chah Ab district of Takhar province collapsed, resulting in the deaths of five child laborers. The incident occurred in the village of “Samti,” with the victims hailing from the “Qandari Qashlaq” village in the Yangi Qala district. The bodies of these children were handed over to their families on Saturday, October 11.
This tragic event came just a day after ten other workers were trapped under rubble due to soil accumulation and landslides in the same area for nearly 24 hours. Local Taliban officials reported the rescue of these workers, underscoring the perilous conditions of mines across Afghanistan.
Unregulated gold mining in remote areas of northern provinces, particularly when carried out by children without safety measures, poses serious threats to workers’ lives. Media outlets have previously warned about the harsh labor conditions children face in the mining sector and expressed concern over the potential for such disasters.
In recent years, the exploitation of children in mining has become a significant issue, calling for urgent attention and action from relevant institutions and society at large. Due to poverty and a lack of alternative job opportunities, these children often find themselves compelled to work in hazardous mines, leading to dire consequences for their well-being.
