The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations has emphasized the essential role of women in humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan, warning of the dangers posed by neglecting women’s rights.

UN: Women’s Involvement in Humanitarian Activities in Afghanistan Is Essential

Tom Fletcher, the UN Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, highlighted that Afghanistan remains a top priority for global humanitarian aid and that unfettered participation of women is critical in this context. He described this involvement as a fundamental requirement for the effectiveness of humanitarian assistance.

During the 81st session of the General Assembly, Fletcher noted that the UN has various support programs in place for the Afghan people, but the effective implementation of these initiatives hinges on granting work permits to female aid workers.

Women’s Participation: A Solution for Reaching Those in Need

Fletcher further asserted that direct participation of women in aid processes is the only real solution for ensuring equitable access to the most vulnerable segments of society. This call comes at a time when a significant portion of the Afghan population relies on international humanitarian assistance, and the ban on women’s activities has created serious challenges for this effort.

Concerns Over Human Rights in Afghanistan

Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has also expressed concerns during discussions about the human rights situation in Afghanistan regarding the inaction and indifference of the international community towards ongoing violations of women’s and girls’ rights. He warned that this silence could have severe repercussions for Afghan society.
