ICRC Calls for Urgent Global Support to Address Afghanistan’s Humanitarian Crisis

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) operations chief has expressed grave concerns regarding the situation of Afghans and emphasized the need for global attention.

The Urgent Need for Global Support for Afghanistan

Yasmeen Praz Dasimaz, the ICRC operations chief, described the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan as extremely alarming during an interview with France News Agency. She underlined that the country urgently requires global attention.

Severe Malnutrition Crisis in Afghanistan

She pointed out that nearly one million Afghan children are facing life-threatening malnutrition, while approximately 3.7 million more are grappling with acute malnutrition. Additionally, a decrease in international aid has led to the closure of 100 child malnutrition clinics.

Challenges Facing the Red Cross in Afghanistan

This ICRC official emphasized that Afghanistan is one of the organization’s five major operations worldwide. However, a decline in financial resources has posed significant challenges for the continuation of their activities. Currently, the ICRC supports 46 clinics and seven rehabilitation centers in the country.

Caring for Affected Communities at the Border

Dasimaz highlighted the importance of focusing on communities impacted by conflicts in Afghanistan and Pakistan, noting that due to the possibility of interacting with the involved parties at the border, the ICRC can play an effective role in supporting the affected individuals.

Concerns Over Women’s Rights Under Taliban Rule

Praz Dasimaz also expressed concern over the Taliban’s restrictions on women, including the ban on education beyond the primary level and employment limitations. She noted that the lack of female staff in the healthcare sector could have long-lasting consequences for society.
