Afghanistan’s UN Seat Dispute: Acting Envoy Rejects Taliban’s Claims

Nasira Ahmad Faiq, the acting head of Afghanistan’s permanent mission to the United Nations, strongly responded to the repeated requests from Amir Khan Muttaqi for the country’s seat at the UN, stating that the Taliban’s claims lack legal backing due to their internal and international illegitimacy.

Details on the Situation

Faiq emphasized that this seat is reserved exclusively for governments that arise from the will of the people. He pointed out that the Taliban have violated accepted global standards by suppressing freedom of expression and imposing severe restrictions on women’s rights to work and education. Currently, the United Nations is withholding the Taliban’s representation due to a lack of international consensus and Kabul’s failure to establish an inclusive political structure, maintaining the representation of the country with former diplomats.
