Afghan UN Envoy Rejects Taliban’s Claims for Recognition

Nasir Ahmad Faik, the acting head of Afghanistan’s permanent mission to the United Nations, has firmly responded to Amir Khan Muttaqi’s repeated requests for recognition of the Taliban’s legitimacy. He characterized the Taliban’s claims as lacking legal backing due to their insufficient domestic and international legitimacy.

Clarification on Diplomatic Recognition

Faik emphasized that the UN seat is designated solely for governments that emerge from the people’s will. He pointed out that the Taliban’s suppression of freedom of expression and severe restrictions on women’s rights to work and education have violated globally accepted standards. Currently, the United Nations has refrained from granting this seat to the Taliban due to a lack of international consensus and Kabul’s failure to establish an inclusive political structure. Consequently, representation for Afghanistan continues to be held by former diplomats.
