Taliban Seeks UN Recognition and Transfer of Afghanistan’s UN Seat

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Taliban stressed the need for enhanced engagement with the United Nations and called for the transfer of Afghanistan’s UN seat to representatives of the current government.

Taliban Emphasizes the Importance of UN Engagement

Zakir Jalali, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Taliban, stated that the relationship between Afghanistan and the United Nations is highly significant and should be expanded at all levels. He urged the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan to strengthen the representation of Afghanistan.

Afghanistan’s UN Seat Currently Unoccupied by Taliban Representatives

Jalali emphasized that the office of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan possesses all the necessary requirements for a diplomatic representation; however, there is currently no Taliban representative occupying Afghanistan’s seat at the UN. He added that the individual currently seated there does not represent the previous government in any way.

Taliban’s Demands and Injustice Toward the Afghan People

Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesperson for the Taliban, previously stated that the continuation of the current situation and the retention of the seat by a representative of the former government constitutes a form of injustice toward the people of Afghanistan, demanding that the seat be transferred to their representatives.

International Challenges Faced by the Taliban Government

The international community has conditioned the recognition of the Taliban government on issues such as the respect for human rights and the formation of an inclusive government. The Taliban, in turn, has called for the release of frozen assets and the removal of their officials from sanction lists.

Changes in UN Leadership and the Status of Afghanistan’s Seat

Recently, Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, appointed Rabab Fatima, a Bangladeshi diplomat, as his new special representative for Afghanistan. Nearly five years have passed since the Taliban’s return to power, yet Afghanistan’s seat at the UN remains occupied by a representative of the former government.
