Taliban Executes Public Flogging Sentences in Afghanistan Amid Human Rights Outcry

The Supreme Court of the Taliban government stated in an announcement that the flogging of fifteen people, including one woman, has been carried out in public in the provinces of Nangarhar and Ghor. These public actions are part of the Taliban government’s enforcement of corporal punishment and Sharia penalties.

Public Punishment in Nangarhar

According to the Supreme Court’s announcement, fourteen individuals, including one woman, were punished in public based on the verdict of the city court and the district primary court of Lalpura, Nangarhar, in recent days. These individuals were convicted of various charges including fleeing home, buying and selling alcohol, sodomy, and theft. The Taliban Supreme Court specified that each of these defendants received between 30 to 39 lashes.

Sentence for Moral Corruption in Ghor

In another announcement from the same court, it was mentioned that another individual has been lashed in public in the Saghir district of Ghor province for charges of moral corruption. This individual had previously been sentenced to 39 lashes.

Since regaining power in Afghanistan, the Taliban have been executing corporal punishments and Sharia penalties in public and have publicly executed eleven people in front of hundreds of spectators, in addition to hundreds of instances of flogging.

Violation of International Laws

International human rights organizations consider the execution and corporal punishment of accused individuals in public to be in violation of international laws and inconsistent with human dignity. These organizations have repeatedly issued multiple statements calling for an immediate halt to these punishments and adherence to human rights by the Taliban government.
