Rising Human Trafficking Threat in Afghanistan: UN and IOM Warn of Alarming Vulnerabilities

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have issued a joint statement warning about the rising threat of human trafficking in Afghanistan. They identified factors such as poverty, the return of migrants, reduced humanitarian aid, and imposed restrictions on women and girls as key contributors to the increased vulnerability of citizens.

Factors Contributing to the Increased Risk of Human Trafficking

In their statement, the organizations highlighted that the massive return of migrants from neighboring countries, the weakening of rural economies, a significant decline in humanitarian assistance, natural disasters, and restrictions on the rights of women and girls have heightened the vulnerability of Afghan citizens to human trafficking and various forms of exploitation. The UNODC and IOM stressed that the continuation of these conditions significantly increases the risk of exploitation of those in need.

Over Half of Returning Families Facing Economic Hardships

According to findings released in the statement, 56% of families returning to Afghanistan are unable to meet their basic living needs. The organizations noted that economic difficulties and pressing livelihood challenges have put many families at risk of exploitation and abuse.

Warning About Different Forms of Exploitation

The joint statement indicated that victims facing financial pressures may be pushed into unsafe and forced labor, sexual exploitation, conditions akin to slavery, or even forced organ removal. The two organizations underscored that such cases represent serious instances of human trafficking that require immediate preventive and counteractive measures.

Women, Children, and Returnees at Highest Risk

The UNODC and IOM reported that women, children, returning migrants, and indebted families are at the greatest risk of human trafficking and exploitation compared to other groups. They urged the international community and responsible entities to enhance support programs, raise public awareness, and expand international cooperation to combat the phenomenon of human trafficking in Afghanistan.
