Several property owners in Kabul have expressed worries regarding the quality of materials used in their residential complexes, which were turned over to construction companies. They report that in exchange for receiving a few apartments, their homes have been demolished and now expect new structures to be built with standard materials and in accordance with technical specifications.

High Risk of Collapse with 80 Percent of Buildings Being Substandard in Kabul

Building experts warn that failure to comply with construction standards and the use of subpar materials in a seismically vulnerable country like Afghanistan could lead to serious consequences. According to previous statements from officials at the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing of the former republic, 80 percent of the country’s multi-story buildings have been constructed with low-quality and unsafely sourced materials.

Bast, one of the owners, stated, “People who invest their entire life savings in projects have the right to know whether the buildings are being constructed according to technical standards.” Another owner, Mirois, highlighted additional concerns, including delays in project completions, changes in building plans, and a lack of essential amenities.

Hamid, a construction engineer, emphasized, “If construction companies disregard quality, the safety of buildings will be at risk.” He also reminded that the use of inferior materials could diminish a building’s resilience against natural disasters.

In recent years, construction projects and residential complexes have been increasing in Kabul at a rapid pace. Nevertheless, experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of adhering to construction standards and monitoring the building process. Concerns about material quality continue to persist.
