Kabul Homeowners Demand Stricter Standards Amid Quality Concerns in Construction

Building project owners in Kabul express concern over the quality of materials used in construction. They demand adherence to technical standards and the use of high-quality materials in the construction of buildings.

Concerns Over Substandard Materials in Kabul’s Construction Projects

A number of homeowners in Kabul, who have entrusted their properties to construction companies for residential complexes, are worried about the quality of materials being used. They claim that in exchange for receiving a few apartment units, their homes have been demolished, and they expect the new buildings to be constructed with standard materials that adhere to technical criteria.

High Risk of Collapse with 80% of Buildings Built to Substandard Standards

Construction experts warn that the failure to adhere to building standards and the use of substandard materials in a country like Afghanistan, which is prone to earthquakes, can lead to serious consequences. Previous officials from the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing of the former Republic have stated that 80% of the country’s high-rise buildings were constructed using low-quality materials in a non-standard manner.

Construction Project Owners: Quality Control is Essential

Basit, one of the property owners, stated, “People who invest their entire life savings in the Sharikabad project have the right to know whether the buildings are being constructed according to technical standards or not.” Another owner, Mirois, highlighted additional concerns including delays in project completion, changes to building plans, and a lack of essential facilities.

Impact of Substandard Materials on Building Safety in Kabul

Hamid, a construction engineer, noted, “If construction companies ignore quality, the safety of the buildings will be at risk.” He also pointed out that the use of low-quality materials can diminish buildings’ resistance to natural disasters.

Increasing Trend of Residential Complex Construction and Existing Challenges

In recent years, construction projects and residential complexes have been rapidly emerging in Kabul. However, experts continue to emphasize the importance of adhering to building standards and monitoring the construction process. Concerns about the quality of materials persist.
