Devastating Floods Claim Lives in Eastern Afghanistan, UN Reports

The United Nations has reported that at least 40 individuals have lost their lives, with many more injured and missing, following severe flooding in the eastern provinces of Afghanistan. International relief agencies have initiated damage assessments and are providing urgent assistance to those affected by this natural disaster.

 

Heavy rainfall and sudden flooding in the provinces of Nuristan, Nangarhar, and Baghlan have once again plunged residents of eastern Afghanistan into mourning. This calamity has not only resulted in significant loss of life but has also caused extensive financial damage, completely destroying vital infrastructure, agricultural lands, and residential homes across several districts.

Stefan Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, announced in a press briefing that initial reports indicate the death toll stands at 40. He stated that dozens of others have sustained injuries, and efforts are ongoing to locate the missing individuals. The UN spokesperson emphasized that the floods have severely damaged public buildings, transportation routes, and commercial centers, with some areas reported to be in a critical state.

Emergency Teams on the Ground

In conjunction with the fatality reports, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have deployed assessment and aid teams to the affected regions. Bruno Lemarquis, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Afghanistan, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and highlighted that humanitarian agencies have begun distributing food, temporary shelter, and medical services to the impacted families.

Latest Details on Casualties and Damages

The Disaster Management Authority has also confirmed that the casualty figures in Nuristan are rising, with the bodies of 15 individuals recovered from the rubble thus far. Local reports indicate that over 100 people remain unaccounted for, and nearly 80 others have been injured. Rescue operations, in collaboration with local residents and relevant agencies, continue to search for people trapped under the debris.
