The organization highlights that the Taliban has issued over 20 decrees at the national level, along with numerous others at the provincial level, limiting press freedom.

The organization’s findings indicate that the media environment in Afghanistan becomes increasingly restricted every day, with any criticism of the Taliban government strictly prohibited. Reporters Without Borders also notes that the publication of images of living beings has been banned, and journalists face legal threats and harsh penalties.

Hamid Obaidi: Criticism is Considered a Crime

Hamid Obaidi, head of the Afghanistan Media Support Organization, pointed out that Afghanistan ranks among the five countries with the most troubling press freedom conditions. He emphasized, “In the current regime, criticism is viewed as a crime, and journalists are prosecuted for their critical content.”

Meena Akbari: Journalists Face Social Media Restrictions

Afghan journalist Meena Akbari described the report from Reporters Without Borders as constructive, stating that journalists cannot express their opinions freely even on social media. She remarked, “They are mandated to refrain from discussing certain issues, which is unjust.”

Hundreds of Afghan Journalists Forced to Flee the Country

Reporters Without Borders has called for the repeal of all laws limiting media freedom, noting that hundreds of Afghan journalists have been compelled to leave the country to escape the ongoing repression. The organization urged countries that have provided refuge to journalists to ensure their safety.
