Investigation Demanded After Explosion Injures 42 Children in Kabul

On Monday’s explosion in western Kabul, 42 children were injured. Amnesty International and UNAMA have called for an independent investigation into the incident.

Explosion in Kabul; 42 Children Injured in Tragic Incident

On August 26, a significant explosion occurred in the Mahdiya neighborhood of Kabul, injuring 42 children aged between 9 and 14 years old. This incident has been confirmed by UNAMA, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan. The blast resulted from a hand grenade and took place in the city’s 18th security district.

Both Amnesty International and UNAMA have demanded a thorough and impartial investigation into the tragedy. Expressing condolences for the victims and their families, UNAMA emphasized the necessity of ensuring the safety of schools and educational facilities.

Injured Victims and Security Concerns

Khaleed Zadran, spokesman for the Taliban’s security command in Kabul, reported that investigations into the details of the explosion are underway. Some reports have indicated that the number of injured could be as high as 52 children. An eyewitness, who requested anonymity, noted that most of those injured were schoolgirls participating in a cultural program at their school.

This eyewitness also shared information about the condition of the injured at Imam Zaman Hospital, stating that most patients were in stable condition, though the status of three or four was concerning. He remarked, “I arrived at the hospital about half an hour after the incident, and the condition of the patients was much better than I expected.”

Global Reactions and Concerns Over Similar Attacks

Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, has also called for a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the explosion. While no group has yet claimed responsibility for the blast, the Islamic State’s Khorasan Province has previously taken responsibility for similar attacks in the area.

Amnesty International labeled the incident in Dasht-e Barchi—where a majority of residents are Hazara—as deeply concerning. The organization has urged Taliban authorities to ensure the security of civilians and protect ethnic and religious minorities in Afghanistan.
