Due to the high costs of wedding ceremonies, many young individuals have resorted to borrowing from banks, often facing the inability to repay these loans. One such individual is Wasim, a 30-year-old from Kabul, who took out a loan of 300,000 Afghanis five years ago to fund his wedding but has been unable to repay it after losing his job in the media sector.

Economic Pressures and Youth Disillusionment

Wasim highlights the severe pressures from banks which have impacted his personal life as well. He is simply seeking a stable job to escape this predicament.

Another young man who remains a candidate since the fall of the republic laments the costly wedding customs. Having traveled to Iran in search of work, he was deported and depleted his financial resources, which has dashed his hopes of marrying.

The Taliban’s Ministry of Labor Promises Job Creation

While the Taliban’s Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has yet to respond to these concerns, Mohammad Zahid Ahmadzai, the ministry’s deputy, announced in May plans for job creation. He referenced initiatives related to vocational training programs.

These promises come in the wake of a recent report from the International Labour Organization (ILO) indicating that despite a 14% increase in employment compared to 2022, this growth does not align with the population’s needs and the return of migrants.

Economic Experts Weigh In on the Challenges

Economic expert Nasratullah Wafa suggests that the only solution to these challenges is a focus on short-term training programs and support for small businesses. He emphasizes the importance of collaboration with international organizations to empower youth towards self-sufficiency.
