On Monday, August 26, a new campaign against polio began in five Afghan provinces. This initiative is taking place in Nangarhar, Kunar, Kabul, Herat, and Farah and will run for four days.

Over 2.5 Million Children to be Vaccinated

More than 2 million and 580 thousand children are expected to receive vaccinations as part of this campaign. The immunizations will be administered both as drops and injections for the children.

Health Ministry Spokesman: Local Leaders’ Support is Essential

Sharafat Zaman Amarkhil, spokesman for the Taliban Ministry of Public Health, called on local elders and community leaders to cooperate with vaccinators. This collaboration is essential for the successful implementation of the campaign.

Rising Polio Cases in Afghanistan Highlight Need for Clean Water

Dr. Ghulam Haidar Rafiqi, a pediatric specialist, underscored the importance of clean water and health conditions in the fight against polio. He noted that a lack of public awareness is one of the factors contributing to the increase in polio cases in the country.

Afghanistan Still Faces Polio Crisis

According to the World Health Organization, 16 confirmed polio cases have been reported in Afghanistan this year. This country, along with Pakistan, is recognized as one of the last two nations where the polio virus has not been completely eradicated.
