The polio vaccination campaign has launched in five provinces of Afghanistan, aiming to immunize over 2.5 million children. This initiative is part of efforts to prevent the spread of the polio virus.
The new vaccination effort against polio commenced on Monday, August 16, across five provinces of Afghanistan. This campaign will take place in Nangarhar, Kunar, Kabul, Herat, and Farah, running for four days.
The campaign aims to vaccinate more than 2,580,000 children, utilizing both oral drops and injectable vaccines for the children.
Sharafat Zaman Amarkhil, spokesperson for the Taliban Ministry of Public Health, urged local leaders and influential figures to collaborate with vaccinators. Such cooperation is crucial for the successful execution of the campaign.
Dr. Ghulam Haidar Rafiqi, a pediatric specialist, emphasized the importance of clean water and health safety measures in the fight against polio. He noted that a lack of public awareness is one of the factors contributing to the rising number of polio cases in the country.
According to the World Health Organization, 16 confirmed polio cases have been recorded in Afghanistan this year. The country, along with Pakistan, remains one of the last nations where the polio virus has not been completely eradicated.
