Afghanistan marks 25 years since the September 11 attacks, enduring two decades of war and insecurity. However, significant changes emerged in education and media, which are now facing new restrictions.

25 Years After September 11: Amidst War and Transformation

It has been 25 years since the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States. This event not only impacted global politics but also profoundly transformed Afghanistan’s political, military, and social landscapes. Over these years, Afghanistan has experienced two decades of war and insecurity, while also witnessing substantial changes in education, media, freedom of expression, and the role of women in society.

The September 11 attacks initiated a new chapter of political and military transformation in Afghanistan. In response, the U.S. and its allies launched military operations against the Taliban and al-Qaeda, leading to the collapse of the first Taliban regime within about two months. A new constitution was drafted, media outlets flourished, and millions of children and adolescents gained access to education, alongside the emergence of civil institutions and new job opportunities.

One of the most notable changes during this period was the return of women to schools and universities, as well as their active participation in various social fields. Sadiqa, one woman who experienced these changes, stated, “When the Taliban were ousted, we felt freedom and joy.” Although these transformations occurred amidst ongoing conflict and insecurity, they significantly altered the social fabric of the country.

Challenges and New Restrictions

Following the withdrawal of international forces and the return of the Taliban to power in 2021, Afghanistan faced severe challenges once again. The Taliban imposed numerous restrictions on women and girls, revoking many educational and employment opportunities. Media activities also came under stricter scrutiny.

This situation has prompted a considerable number of Afghan youth to leave the country in search of better opportunities. Now, 25 years after September 11, Afghanistan speaks of major changes while grappling with new limitations and a return to a repressive social environment.
