The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced that 110 schools in Afghanistan were destroyed due to severe floods last year, depriving thousands of students of education.

UNICEF stated that widespread flooding in Afghanistan last year caused the destruction of 110 schools. This destruction deprived thousands of students of their right to education and posed a serious challenge to Afghanistan’s fragile educational system.

In a statement published on X (formerly Twitter), UNICEF emphasized that climate change has had devastating effects on Afghanistan’s education system and called for urgent investment in creating schools resilient to these phenomena.

The organization further noted that last year’s floods in various provinces of Afghanistan not only destroyed schools but also hundreds of homes and other vital infrastructures. Securing funding for rebuilding these educational centers has become an immediate priority.

At the same time, Afghanistan continues to face the crisis of girls being barred from education. Since taking power in August 2021, the Taliban have prohibited girls above sixth grade from attending school. Now, these restrictions, coupled with the widespread destruction of schools, put the educational future of millions of Afghan children at serious risk.

UNICEF and other international organizations have once again called on the global community to take immediate action to address Afghanistan’s educational crisis. Securing funding for rebuilding schools and addressing climate change impacts is essential for ensuring the future of Afghan children.
