Xi Jinping Urges Unity Among Nations to Tackle Afghan Crisis at SCO Summit

Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed the need for member nations to collaborate in addressing the crisis in Afghanistan during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, calling for a unified stance against security threats.

China: A Call for Joint Cooperation in Addressing the Afghan Crisis

At the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit held in Bishkek, President Xi Jinping highlighted the importance of joint cooperation among member states to resolve the crisis in Afghanistan, alongside other regional and global issues. He categorized Afghanistan, alongside the conflict in Ukraine and developments in the Middle East, as a prominent international challenge that requires political solutions.

Xi emphasized the necessity for a unified approach from regional countries regarding both old and new security threats. He discussed expanding cooperation in areas such as counter-terrorism, drug trafficking, and organized crime. He urged member states to fulfill their responsibilities to maintain stability and foster development in the region.

China and the Taliban: Diplomacy Without Formal Recognition

Since the Taliban’s return to power, China has expanded its diplomatic and economic ties with the group, accepting a Taliban ambassador. However, it has yet to formally recognize the Taliban regime. Beijing aims to engage in dialogue and political interaction with the Taliban, urging the group to address the concerns of regional countries and the international community, particularly regarding the activities of terrorist groups.

China’s Role in the Security Council and Management of Afghan Affairs

Recently, Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Taliban administration, acknowledged China’s role at the United Nations as a facilitator in negotiations and in drafting resolutions related to Afghanistan, attesting to China’s thorough understanding of the regional situation. He underscored the importance of China’s role in the Security Council, where it has taken on the responsibility of managing the Afghan dossier since 2025, highlighting China’s pivotal position in overseeing issues surrounding Afghanistan.
