The ongoing closure of the Torkham border crossing and a decrease in imports have severely driven up fish prices in Nangarhar markets. The price per kilogram of fish in Jalalabad has escalated from 250 to 300 Afghanis to approximately 600 to 800 Afghanis.

Buyers and shopkeepers are facing significant challenges as the cold season approaches. Residents of the area have expressed their concerns about the current situation, stating that with rising unemployment and dwindling purchasing power, securing this winter staple has become almost impossible for low-income families.

Reasons for the Price Increase and Domestic Production Status

Fish sellers in Jalalabad argue that the suspension of trade at the Torkham crossing is the primary cause of the sudden price hikes. The crossing has been shut since last year’s Month of Mezan due to military clashes between Islamic Emirate forces and Pakistan, and remains only partially open for the return of migrants.

According to information from the Afghanistan-Pakistan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry, this situation has disrupted the flow of imports and caused significant damage to the livelihoods and businesses of people on both sides of the border. While approximately 100 fish farms operate in Nangarhar province, local stakeholders point out that domestic production is insufficient to meet the extensive market demand.

Concerns Over Future Prices

Fish sellers are warning that unless trade routes are reopened and the production capacity of domestic farms is supported, prices may exceed current levels as winter arrives and demand increases.
