Rising Fish Prices in Nangarhar Spark Concerns Among Local Families

Following the closure of the Torkham border crossing, fish prices in Nangarhar have surged to more than double, creating significant challenges for buyers. The difficult economic conditions have made it increasingly hard for low-income families to acquire this popular food staple.

Fish Price Surge in Nangarhar Due to Torkham Border Crossing Closure

The prolonged closure of the Torkham border crossing and a decrease in imports have led to a steep rise in fish prices in Nangarhar’s markets. The price for a kilogram of fish in Jalalabad has jumped from 250 to 300 Afghanis to approximately 600 to 800 Afghanis.

With the cold season approaching, both buyers and shopkeepers are facing serious challenges. Local citizens are expressing concerns about their current circumstances, stating that rising unemployment and diminished purchasing power have made it nearly impossible for low-income families to secure this popular winter food.

Reasons Behind the Price Increase and Local Production Status

Fish sellers in Jalalabad believe that the halt in trade at the Torkham crossing is the primary reason for the sudden price spike. This crossing has been closed since last October due to military clashes between Taliban forces and Pakistan, functioning only for the one-way return of migrants.

According to the Afghanistan-Pakistan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industries, this situation has disrupted the flow of imported goods, causing severe impacts on the livelihoods and businesses of people on both sides of the border. Although around 100 fish farms are operational in Nangarhar province, local stakeholders point out that domestic production is incapable of meeting the broad market needs.

Concerns for Future Prices

Fish vendors are warning that if trade routes remain closed and support for domestic fish farms is not provided, prices are likely to exceed current levels with the onset of winter and increased demand.
