Residents of Angorbagh in Jalalabad are voicing their complaints about being forcibly evicted from their homes by the Taliban, stating they have been driven out despite having valid documents.
A number of residents from the Angorbagh area in Jalalabad, Nangarhar, have expressed significant discontent over the Taliban’s recent actions to evacuate their homes. The affected individuals argue that despite possessing legal documentation supporting their residency, they have been abruptly displaced and are now left exposed to the cold along the roadsides.
Reports indicate that the dispute revolves around an eight-acre piece of land containing 39 residential houses, which has escalated following a ruling from the Taliban Supreme Court. A spokesperson from the court stated that ownership of the land has been established based on religious documents and must be handed over to its original heir.
Haji Bahram, who claims to be the owner of this property, asserts that he possesses the legal deed for the land and that his requests were ignored by the previous government. Conversely, the residents maintain that they purchased the land approximately 40 to 45 years ago from the former municipality and have paid for it accordingly.
The release of a video featuring a woman crying alongside her children standing by the road has sparked widespread reactions on social media. A local entrepreneur has criticized the eviction as unjust and called for providing adequate housing solutions for these families.
So far, officials from the Nangarhar provincial administration and the Jalalabad municipality have not made any clear statements regarding this issue; however, media in the province insist that the evictions were conducted in accordance with legal decisions.
These events unfold during a time when the Taliban continues its campaign to reclaim state-owned lands, further exacerbating land disputes across the country. Meanwhile, the housing crisis is becoming increasingly acute due to the large-scale return of migrants.
