Pakistani military and intelligence officials have convened meetings to explore potential military and financial support for armed groups opposing the Taliban. This development reflects a significant shift in Islamabad’s approach toward confronting Kabul.
In recent months, Pakistani military and intelligence officials have been holding discussions with leaders of armed groups opposing the Taliban. These meetings aim to assess the possibility of providing military and financial assistance from Islamabad to these groups.
This engagement clearly indicates a change in Pakistan’s policies and the country’s willingness to adopt a more confrontational stance against Kabul. Ibrahim Baheessi, an analyst on Afghan issues at the International Crisis Group, has warned that escalating such conflicts could lead to severe consequences.
Baheessi further explained that while Islamabad accuses the Taliban of harboring militants from the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Kabul has rejected these allegations, instead accusing Pakistan of supporting the Taliban’s adversaries. Tensions between the two countries have intensified since Islamabad declared a “full-blown war” late last year.
These conflicts have resulted in over 1,100 civilian casualties in Afghanistan and significant civilian losses in Pakistan. Additionally, mediation efforts from regional countries, including China, Russia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, have not yielded successful outcomes; the recent security meeting in Moscow concluded without a joint statement.
Experts believe that the parties’ insistence on their respective positions serves as a barrier to any effective action by any country to alleviate this crisis.
