The meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) commenced in Baghdad, focusing on the rights of Afghan women and girls. The Secretary-General of the organization emphasized the need for engagement with the Taliban and support for human rights.

Developments in Afghanistan at the Baghdad Meeting

The fifty-second session of the OIC’s Council of Foreign Ministers began in Baghdad, centering on developments in Afghanistan and regional challenges. This conference also addresses crises in Yemen and Sudan, as well as matters related to Jammu and Kashmir.

Emphasis on the Rights of Afghan Women and Girls

Ismail bin Sheikh Ahmed, the OIC Secretary-General, highlighted the importance of continuing dialogue with Taliban officials, stressing that the access of Afghan girls and women to education and employment should be at the forefront of these discussions. This statement comes as barriers to girls’ education, especially beyond the sixth grade and at universities, remain in place.

Support for Humanitarian Needs and Fundamental Rights

In another part of his address, the Secretary-General pointed out the urgency of addressing humanitarian needs, economic growth, and the fundamental rights of children, women, and ethnic minorities. However, the published outcomes of this meeting did not include any reports on the Taliban’s response or timelines for achieving tangible results concerning women’s rights.

Absence of an Afghan Representative at the Meeting

The two-day conference, themed “Dialogue and Solidarity; Two Key Principles for Strengthening Peace and Sustainable Development,” took place without a representative from Afghanistan. Previously, Tariq Ali Bakheet, the OIC’s special envoy for Afghanistan, discussed humanitarian assistance and economic challenges with Taliban officials and foreign diplomats during his visit to Kabul.
