Taliban’s Suhail Shaheen calls the denial of Afghanistan’s UN seat “injustice,” stating the government meets recognition standards.
Taliban Demands Afghanistan’s Seat at the United Nations Suhail Shaheen, head of the Taliban’s political office in Qatar, described the refusal to transfer Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations to the caretaker government as an “injustice” and a “violation of fundamental principles.” Shaheen stated that each year, at the request of certain countries, the UN Credentials Committee defers the decision to assign Afghanistan’s seat to the Taliban-led caretaker government. He emphasized that the caretaker government has met all international standards required for recognition. However, he noted, political considerations continue to prevent formal acknowledgment of the government. Shaheen added that during his meetings with representatives of various countries in Doha, his primary request was the formal recognition of the caretaker government.
