Surge in Afghan Traders Boosts Uzbekistan’s Economic Ties

The Uzbek Statistics Committee has reported that over 171,732 Afghan traders have entered the country in the first five months of this year, representing 89% of all foreign merchants.

According to the latest official report from the Uzbek Statistics Committee, the influx of Afghan merchants into Uzbekistan has surged dramatically in 2023. The recorded figures show that 171,732 individuals from Afghanistan have crossed into Uzbekistan for purposes of investment, trade, and other various commercial activities, reflecting a vibrant economic relationship within the region.

Regional Countries Ranked in Uzbekistan’s Trade Structure

Data from Uzbek authorities indicates that, during this period, a total of 191,500 foreign traders entered Uzbekistan. Among them, Afghan nationals accounted for a remarkable 89%, establishing themselves as the largest and most influential group of foreign traders in Uzbekistan; a statistic that indicates a significant disparity in the number of Afghan traders compared to other countries in the region.

Positive Impacts of Enhanced Transit Routes and Economic Integration

Experts believe that the substantial increase in the presence of Afghan investors and traders in Uzbekistan in recent years is driven by both parties’ desire to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties. The substantial facilitation of business visa issuance, the development of transportation infrastructure and railway lines, the activation of regional transit corridors, and the establishment of joint border markets are identified as key factors behind this economic boom. These developments have drawn traders towards the stable markets of their northern neighbor despite ongoing challenges within Afghanistan.
