The Statistical Committee of Uzbekistan has reported that during the first five months of the current Gregorian year, over 171,000 Afghan traders have entered the country for economic activities, making up 89% of all foreign merchants.

Uzbekistan’s Statistical Committee has recently published a report indicating a historic increase in the number of Afghan traders entering the country in 2023. According to official records, 171,732 residents of Afghanistan have crossed into Uzbekistan for purposes including investment, trade, and various business activities, highlighting the dynamic economic relations within the region.

Leading Foreign Investors in Uzbekistan

The data shows that a total of 191,500 foreign traders from various nations have entered Uzbekistan in the same period. Notably, Afghan nationals represent a remarkable 89% of this figure, establishing themselves as the largest and most influential group of foreign traders in Uzbekistan. This statistic illustrates the significant presence of Afghan merchants compared to those from other regional countries.

Regional Countries’ Rankings in Uzbekistan’s Trade Landscape

According to the official information released by Tashkent, following Afghanistan at the top of the list, the next countries in terms of the number of incoming traders to Uzbekistan include Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkey, respectively. This scenario reflects a new structure of capital distribution and international trade within Central Asia.

Positive Impacts of Enhanced Transit Routes and Economic Integration

Economic experts believe that the substantial increase in the presence of Afghan investors and traders in Uzbekistan in recent years is a result of both sides’ willingness to strengthen diplomatic and economic relations. The easing of visa issuance, the development of transport infrastructure and railway lines, the activation of regional transit corridors, and the establishment of joint border markets are among the primary drivers of this significant economic leap. Moreover, alongside internal challenges in Afghanistan, Afghan traders are increasingly gravitating toward the more stable markets of their northern neighbor.
