German media outlets report that five members of the country’s military are under investigation for alleged theft during the tumultuous evacuation from Hamid Karzai International Airport in August 2021. They are now facing legal proceedings and criminal charges initiated by the public prosecutor’s office in the city of Kempten.
According to a report by Bild, the incident occurred in the military section of Kabul Airport, where military uniforms, T-shirts, fabric insignias, and various memorabilia were displayed for sale to troops. The five soldiers are accused of taking these items without payment and unauthorized. Additionally, reports have surfaced regarding the disappearance of several military knives in the same vicinity.
The public prosecutor’s office in Kempten has confirmed that the case is still under investigation. Officials disclosed that the theft in Kabul was uncovered while police and investigators were looking into a separate case involving other military personnel. During interrogations, information about these disciplinary and financial violations in Kabul emerged.
The German Ministry of Defense stated that upon receiving initial reports, the army’s disciplinary investigation office has been examining the matter and has formally referred the case to the public prosecutor in Kempten to ensure that any potential offenses are addressed according to national criminal laws.
