Abbas Araqchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, told reporters today that Tehran is heavily engaged in diplomatic efforts to resolve border and security tensions between the Taliban government and the Pakistani state. Araqchi stated: In recent days, we have been engaged in efforts to create stability and peace between Pakistan and Afghanistan. He added that numerous phone calls have been made with officials from both sides and expressed hope that these efforts would yield tangible results, and God willing, a regional meeting would be held in this regard. The Iranian Foreign Minister did not provide further details about the exact timing and agenda of this meeting. It is worth mentioning that Araqchi had also held phone conversations last week with the foreign ministers of the Taliban and Pakistan, as well as with the foreign ministers of Qatar, Turkey, and Russia, emphasizing the resolution of tensions between Kabul and Islamabad through diplomacy. Iran’s efforts began after the failure of previous negotiations between the two sides mediated by Qatar and Turkey.
In response to this Iranian initiative, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry announced that it welcomes Tehran’s proposal for mediation between Islamabad and the Taliban. Tahir Hussain Andrabi, spokesperson for Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, referred to Iran as a brotherly and friendly country and emphasized that Islamabad supports any initiative that helps resolve disputes peacefully. Andrabi added: In the matter of border terrorism, Pakistan has a very strong dossier and we welcome Iran’s mediation. The spokesperson for Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry emphasized that Iran could play an important role in reducing recent tensions. Tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan have intensified following an increase in border attacks, airstrikes by Pakistan, and Islamabad’s repeated accusations of the activities of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) from Afghan soil, accusations that the Taliban have constantly denied.
