On the anniversary of Afghanistan’s independence, former President Hamid Karzai issued a statement urging the Taliban to allow Afghan girls and women to resume their education in schools and universities.
Karzai emphasized the importance of education for the nation’s future, stating, “The bright future of Afghanistan depends on the education of our young generation. On this significant occasion, and for the sake of a truly independent and self-sufficient Afghanistan, I once again call on the caretaker government to immediately reopen the doors of schools and universities for the girls of our country. Education is the key to their empowerment and to the progress of our nation.”
Karzai highlighted that more than a thousand days have passed since the closure of girls’ schools and over 500 days since universities were shut to them, yet the Taliban has not provided a clear plan or vision for resolving this critical issue.
