The European Union has announced that ChatGPT and Reddit must comply with new stringent regulations being imposed on major online platforms. These regulations include the removal of illegal content and the protection of user privacy.
On Monday, the European Union declared that OpenAI’s ChatGPT and the social platform Reddit must align with new strict rules targeting large online platforms. This decision comes in light of the remarkable surge in users of these platforms within the EU.
ChatGPT, Reddit, and the gaming platform Roblox have been classified as Very Large Online Platforms under the EU’s Digital Services Act. This classification means they face additional requirements, such as the removal of illegal content and enhanced privacy protections for users, particularly minors. Failure to meet these regulations could result in fines of up to 6% of their global revenue.
A spokesperson for OpenAI indicated that the company is preparing to comply with the new requirements. Roblox, the first gaming platform to reach this threshold in the EU, also expressed a commitment to user safety and plans to continue collaborating with the European Commission.
This decision comes at a time when the European Union faces pressure from Washington, which argues that these regulations unfairly impact American companies. Nonetheless, the European Commission maintains that its digital laws apply to all companies, regardless of their country of origin.
