Canadian Foreign Minister condemns Taliban policies at UN, stating they must be accountable for treatment of women/girls and adhere to international law.
Canada Condemns Taliban Policies In a forceful address at the United Nations General Assembly, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly condemned the Taliban’s oppressive policies and stressed the need to hold the group accountable for its treatment of women and girls. Joly stated unequivocally, “The Taliban cannot flout international laws with mere decrees.” The Canadian Foreign Minister highlighted that Canada, alongside Australia, Germany, and the Netherlands, with backing from 22 other nations, had recently launched efforts to hold Afghanistan accountable under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. “The Taliban cannot simply dismiss international law with the stroke of a pen,” Joly reiterated. “Canada stands for freedom from oppression, not exploitation. Protecting human rights, including the inherent dignity of both men and women, must be a global priority and should never be a matter of debate.”
