A New York court has convicted a former Taliban commander of killing three American soldiers and an Afghan translator, as well as shooting down an American helicopter in 2008.
The US Attorney’s Office in Manhattan said Haji Najibullah, who once served as commander of the Taliban in Wardak province near Kabul, had been charged with 13 counts.
He was previously charged with kidnapping an American journalist in 2008, and the new indictment replaces the previous case, which includes kidnapping charges.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office further charged Najibullah with commanding an attack on a U.S. military convoy, killing three U.S. soldiers and an Afghan translator.
Najibullah, who is being held in the United States, has not yet pleaded guilty.
