Short Link:
After decades of war, Afghanistan continues to face a crisis of landmines and remnants of war that threaten human lives, especially children, every day. With the rise of the Taliban, demining efforts have been disrupted, and the country still requires urgent international action to address this crisis.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has reported that after decades of conflict, Afghanistan remains one of the most heavily affected countries by landmines and remnants of war.
UNAMA stated on the social media platform X, “The remnants of explosions and landmines threaten human lives daily, especially children, who are the main victims of this crisis.”
According to the mission, buried mines and unexploded ordnance from years of war continue to claim victims across Afghanistan. Despite millions of dollars being spent by international organizations for demining efforts, the problem remains far from resolved.
Furthermore, UNAMA emphasized that with the return of the Taliban to power, demining operations in the country have been severely disrupted. Many organizations responsible for clearing mines have either limited their activities or completely halted them.
Afghanistan is one of the countries facing serious challenges in protecting civilians from landmines. These hidden threats continue to claim hundreds of victims annually, particularly among civilians and children, and require immediate attention and coordinated action by the international community.
