In a statement issued on Earth Day, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) highlighted that 79% of Afghan families lack access to drinking water, underscoring a profound crisis in the country.
The statement expressed the UN’s concern over the acute shortage of potable water in Afghanistan. Additionally, a November 2023 report from the UNDP ranked Afghanistan sixth among countries most vulnerable to climate change impacts last year.
Further compounding the crisis, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reported that approximately 12 million people in Afghanistan are without access to safe drinking water, emphasizing the severity of the humanitarian situation.
