The United Nations has revealed that ISIS is actively seeking to acquire leftover United States military equipment in Afghanistan.
According to the 18th report on ISIS threats by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the terrorist group aims to secure equipment from caches belonging to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
The report highlights concerns among UN member states regarding the spread of military hardware in Afghanistan, the Middle East, and Africa. It also points out ISIS’s use of drones and improvised explosive devices.
Several UN member countries have noted that a significant portion of the American military equipment was captured by the Taliban following the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.
ISIS’s efforts to obtain weapons from the TTP, which maintains a close association with the Taliban, underscore the ongoing threat the group poses to Afghanistan and the broader region. The United Nations continues to identify ISIS as a major security challenge in the area.
