The United Nations says the number of ISIS fighters in Afghanistan now stands at 40,000, of whom 2,000 are foreigners.
The UN Security Council’s Sanctions Monitoring Committee has issued a report expressing concern over the security situation in Afghanistan, stating that most ISIS fighters have been released from prisons during the fall of the previous government and that the threat of terrorism in Afghanistan is increasing.
The committee had previously reported on the visit of a son of former al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden to Afghanistan and his meeting with Taliban leaders in October last year.
The British Homeland Security chief recently warned that Afghanistan would once again become a haven for terrorists.
