The Possibility of Lifting Russian Sanctions Against the Taliban

The Russian ambassador to the United Nations has announced the potential lifting of Russian sanctions against the Taliban.

According to the French news agency, Vasiliy Nebenzia, the Russian ambassador to the United Nations, indicated that the lifting of Russian sanctions against the Taliban is being considered.

“As for how far we are from lifting Russian sanctions against them, I can’t give a definitive answer, but I’ve heard talk about it,” Nebenzia said without providing further details.

He reiterated statements from high-ranking Russian officials, asserting that the Taliban is the main power in Afghanistan and controls the administration of the country.

While Russia has not recognized the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan, it has defended the group’s positions in international meetings, including sessions of the Security Council.
