Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Taliban, responded to the recent statement from the head of the British army regarding the investigation into alleged war crimes by British special forces in Afghanistan. Mujahid dismissed this action as symbolic.
Highlighting the broader context, Mujahid asserted that American and NATO forces, during their extended presence in Afghanistan, were responsible for numerous war crimes. He emphasized the necessity for an impartial institution, acceptable to all parties, to thoroughly investigate these alleged transgressions.
Mujahid went on to insist that NATO member countries should provide compensation to the families of those affected by war crimes committed in Afghanistan.
Casting doubt on the credibility of investigations conducted by occupying forces, the Taliban spokesperson stated, “There is no trust in the occupying forces to investigate their war crimes.” Furthermore, he criticized attempts to attribute crimes spanning two decades to a few soldiers, characterizing it as an endeavor to absolve all forces involved. According to Mujahid, such symbolic gestures are unlikely to be effective.
