وهابیت 550x295 - Taliban Conference in Ghor: Wahhabism Declared a Takfiri Sect in Afghanistan

In a recent conference of Taliban clerics in Ghor province, Afghanistan, Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, the founder of the Wahhabi movement, was labeled as a Kharijite and Takfiri. The movement itself was declared a false sect.

During this conference, Taliban clerics analyzed the history and foundations of Wahhabism and strongly criticized its founder, Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab. One of the attending scholars stated that Abd al-Wahhab introduced innovative and heretical teachings into Islam. He particularly referenced Abd al-Wahhab’s rebellion against the ruler of Mecca, Sultan Selim III, claiming that he branded Muslims as infidels and called for their re-conversion to Islam.

The cleric added that Wahhabism deviates from the core teachings of Islam and should be considered a false sect. From the Taliban’s perspective, Wahhabi followers need internal reform and a shift in their ideological stance.

Taliban’s View on ISIS-K and Wahhabism

Some Taliban officials at the conference stated that ISIS-Khorasan, especially in Afghanistan, follows the teachings of Abd al-Wahhab and Saudi Wahhabism. They emphasized the need to combat these groups. This indicates a shift in the Taliban’s approach toward Salafi and Wahhabi movements in Afghanistan.

Since regaining power, the Taliban have taken extensive measures against Salafi followers, particularly Wahhabis. Reports indicate that Taliban security agencies have shut down Wahhabi-affiliated schools and educational centers in various parts of Afghanistan, arresting and imprisoning several Wahhabi leaders.

Taliban’s Response to Wahhabi Followers

This policy reflects the Taliban’s efforts to establish a strict religious and ideological order in Afghanistan that contrasts with Wahhabism and other Salafi factions. These actions highlight internal tensions among jihadist groups and contribute to broader ideological and theological debates within Afghanistan and globally.

Given these developments, it appears that the Taliban aim to assert strict religious oversight over various Islamic movements, rejecting any deviation from their official doctrine.
