The United Nations has reported a serious crisis in Afghanistan’s educational system, highlighting the need for $160 million to address the challenges.

Afghanistan’s Education System Requires $160 Million

According to a report from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Afghanistan is experiencing an unprecedented shortage of teachers and educational facilities. The organization has stated that the country’s education system is facing a severe budget deficit to meet its needs for 2026.

Insufficient International Aid

In a statement released on October 8, OCHA noted that of the $160 million budget required this year to support the education sector, only $22 million has been provided so far by international donors. The organization warns that the mismatch in funding could lead to serious challenges in educational progress.

Negative Impacts on Girls’ Education

The report also underscores the critical situation for girls in education, emphasizing the ban on continuing education beyond the sixth grade. The UN has urged the global community to exert more pressure to lift the immediate restrictions on education for women and girls.

Urgent Need for Educational Funding

OCHA concluded the report by stressing the urgent need for educational funding, warning that negligence will deepen the educational crisis in Afghanistan. The organization calls upon various countries and international bodies to step in to address Afghanistan’s educational needs.
