Cyclists in Afghanistan’s capital are urging the establishment of segregated lanes to navigate the growing traffic and interference from vehicles. This demand is particularly voiced in busy areas like Dasht-e Afghan and Karte Naw, where simultaneous movement of bicycles alongside motorcycles and cars has led to significant challenges.

Many citizens believe that using a bicycle as an economical and efficient transportation option could alleviate the current economic strain, but this requires the creation of safe and designated routes.

Kabul City Council Advisor: 20 Kilometers of Special Cycling Lanes Have Been Constructed

Nematullah Barkhazi, a cultural advisor to the Kabul municipality, announced that work is underway on a project to create 70 kilometers of dedicated cycling paths, with 20 kilometers already implemented on wide roads where vehicle speeds exceed 50 kilometers per hour.

However, urban experts warn that these measures on major roads are insufficient. To facilitate cyclists in congested areas, there is a pressing need for shared bicycle lanes that prioritize their passage.

Rahetgul Ziyar Mal, a construction affairs expert, emphasizes that improving conditions for cyclists requires precise management, monitoring via traffic cameras, and enhancing driving culture within the community. Additionally, the occupation of existing limited pathways by mobile vendors and shopkeepers complicates matters, highlighting the necessity for awareness campaigns to prevent obstruction of these special lanes.
