Belgium to Deport Afghan Refugees Convicted of Crimes After Sentencing

Belgian authorities have announced that Afghan refugees found guilty of crimes will be deported back to Afghanistan after serving their sentences. This decision was made during an informal meeting of European countries.

Belgium: Afghan Criminal Refugees to be Deported After Sentencing

Officials in Brussels have declared that Afghan refugees who commit crimes within the European Union will be expelled from Belgium and returned to Afghanistan after completing their sentences. Annelies Verlinden, Belgium’s Minister of Asylum and Migration, emphasized that no acceptance will be extended to these offenders.

The Belgian minister referred to contacts with Kabul authorities as a means of ‘technical cooperation’ and stressed that this does not imply recognition or political support for these individuals. This stance follows an informal meeting among representatives from Belgium, France, Poland, Denmark, Austria, and the Czech Republic held in Munich, Germany.

Challenges Faced by Afghan Migrants in Belgium

Immigrant rights activists in Brussels have expressed concerns over the increasing administrative and legal pressures faced by Afghan nationals. Issues such as illegal employment, interpersonal conflicts stemming from psychological stress, and delays in processing applications have made life particularly challenging for Afghan migrants. Moreover, nearly 80 percent of Afghan asylum requests are rejected, exacerbating their hardships.

The policy of deporting criminal refugees is not limited to Belgium; Germany has also returned hundreds of eligible Afghan individuals to their home country in recent months. Despite two rounds of technical talks held between representatives of European nations and the Taliban delegation in Brussels, EU member states insist that these meetings are strictly administrative and will not lead to any changes in formal diplomatic interactions.
