In its latest report, the World Health Organization announced that this week, four new confirmed cases of polio have been identified in Afghanistan. The new cases were recorded in the districts of Dangam in Kunar province, Kamdish in Nuristan, Farah, and Lashkargah in Helmand.

Parents Express Concerns Over Their Ailing Children

Ayesha, the mother of a polio-affected child, has voiced her deep concerns regarding the condition of her 14-year-old daughter and has called for more assistance for her treatment. Mustafa, the father of a girl named Limeh, mentioned that her health had been stable at birth but progressively worsened, prompting him to seek help from the Ministry of Public Health.

Awareness and Vaccination: Key Strategies Against Polio

Dr. Ghulam Haidar Rafifi, a pediatrician and one of the founders of the polio vaccination program in Afghanistan, emphasized that the lack of public awareness is a significant factor contributing to the rise in polio cases. He urged for the acceleration and expansion of vaccination and awareness initiatives to combat the disease.

He stated, “We must vaccinate children at all stages and work towards preventing further infections.” According to Dr. Rafifi, in addition to vaccination, access to clean water and proper sanitation are crucial elements in the fight against polio.

Alarming Statistics

With the announcement of these new cases, the total number of children affected by polio in Afghanistan this year has risen to 23. Pakistan is also facing three confirmed cases. In 2025, the number of positive polio cases in Afghanistan and Pakistan had reached 52.

Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the two countries still grappling with the serious challenge of polio, necessitating serious and coordinated efforts to control and prevent the disease.
