Delays in processing the asylum applications of Afghan women in India have presented serious challenges to their lives. The lack of documentation and basic rights has complicated their situations.

Afghan Women Refugees in India: Over 8,000 in Limbo

The lengthy process of reviewing asylum cases by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has left hundreds of Afghan women and girls in India in a state of uncertainty. According to UN statistics, by the end of February 2026, over 8,000 Afghan refugees and asylum seekers have been registered in India, primarily comprising women and children.

Afghan women in India report that due to the absence of valid residency documents and work permits, they are deprived of their fundamental rights. Financial difficulties hinder their ability to enroll children in private schools, while the lack of acceptance in public schools severely impacts these families, many of whom have endured these challenging conditions for years.

Challenges from Delays in Case Processing

Shamsuddin Qarizada, the head of the Afghan Solidarity Committee in India, attributes the sluggish pace of case reviews to a shortage of UN staff and bureaucratic structures. He warns that some families might remain in limbo for decades without a resolution.

UNHCR officials, on the other hand, emphasize that vulnerable women and girls are prioritized in resettlement programs, and case processing will gradually proceed based on the available capacity in 2026.

Hope for the Future

This state of uncertainty parallels the experiences of many Afghan refugees in Iran and Pakistan. However, the recent announcement from the UK regarding the resumption of resettlement plans, allocating approximately 25% of the quota to Afghan women and Palestinian refugees, has provided a renewed sense of hope for these asylum seekers.
